The so called Union Calvary raid on Richmond, Va. in 1864, named after low life Union general Judson Kilpatrick and wet behind the ears 21 year old political Col. Ulric Dahlgren, was many things, but mostly it was a bungled assassination attempt on Confederate President Jefferson Finis Davis and his cabinet. It also was to include the release of Yankee prisoners of war on Belle Island and at Libby Prison in Richmond, and in the torching of the city.
As one reads about the rise of each of these two rotten men, one see’s the ego, and the hunt for fame, the Narcissism, and the Political assistance they received from places on high in the Lincoln government. Kilpatrick was a scoundrel, a glory hunter, an opportunist and he used the lives of others to pay for his rise. I also must say that above all else, the details of the day to day journey from the starting point in the small town of Stevensburg, Virginia, which is located in Culpeper County Virginia, and is about 80 miles distance by horse back. As these planned Yankee assassins left Culpeper on April 28, 1864, with hopes do their dirty deeds and to gain fame with Lincoln and the Yankee heathen, fate was in the mix.
As history has written, described in verbal hand me down accounts as well as the thousands of letters, newspaper accounts, military records and other documented materials, Yankee soldiers were going to steal, loot, damage, destroy not simply military targets, oh no, far from it , but many, many famous and historic mansions, along with their barns, stables, mills, that were first looted, money, jewelry, silverware, important heirlooms, small pieces of furniture taken by the men, and many other items as well as food, meat, livestock, were stolen from the homes and businesses of private citizens. This practice was the normal protocol for both Kilpatrick and his 3000 or so men and and the smaller 400 plus command of Dahlgren. As these so called soldiers, who were actually outlaws, holdup men, robbers, thieves, arsonist, rapists and murderers, that trotted across Culpeper , Louisa, Spottsylvania, Caroline, Hanover, and Goochland and Henrico counties in their journey to Richmond over the days of April 28 thru March 1.
They looted, stole, ransacked, burned many structures in addition to railroads, telegraph lines and such. They were outlaws, thieves in army uniforms. In addition, they constantly sought sex from black slave women, this was noted many times, and they also injured and killed a number of civilians as well as a few Confederates in their raid.
In the end these men failed to very achieve any objective inside Richmond, they were stopped and then chased across Eastern Virginia. They then ran East thru Henrico, Hanover, New Kent, King William, King and Queen counties. So as these various groups of Yankee losers were driven away from Richmond, Kilpatrick, eventually going further South to Yorktown Virginia, but not without burning many structures out of pure evil and spite. He even returned later into King and Queen Courthouse, and burned and destroyed many homes and buildings as vengeance against the people of King and Queen County who helped thwart his plans.
Dahlgren, who had been separated from Kilpatrick in late April, also looted, burned and murdered civilians in his escape. Later in the late hours of March 4, 1864, cold, wet, and dark, this 21 year old Yankee met his maker, as he and his band of outlaws came across the blocked road at the crossroads intersection of the River rd. and the road to Stevensville in lower King and King County Virginia, where Confederate Lt. James Pollard who commanded Company H, 9t. Virginia Calvary along with many local home guard members, blocked Dahlgren’s path. Dahlgren demanded they surrender, but they opened a deadly fire on the Yankee outlaw planned assassins, killing Dahlgren on the spot. His body was buried there in King & Queen County after his watch and ring taken, along with documents detailing the assassination plan and the release of the prisoners and the burning of Richmond. Of course our liar Lincoln administration said it was not true, just like Hillary says her e mail scandal did not happen, and liberal evil people continue to harm mankind, with evil plans and lies. Kilpatrick and Dahlgren failed, Later the body of Dahlgren was taken to Richmond to confirm it’s identity, then secretly buried in a secret grave in OakWood Cemetery in Richmond. later at night dug up by people under the orders of wealthy Union spy and Richmonder Elizabeth Van Lew’s accomplices, taken to her Churchhill and a cast iron coffin procured by a Mr. Lohman with help from a Mr .Rowlett and Lipscomb and take North A few miles outside the city near Hungary Springs Station and reburied. Then a year later after the surrender it was taken to Washington, and eventually to Philadelphia, and reburied, all in all the body was buried 5 times before making it back to the Dahlgren family graveyard in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Pensylvania.
